The Gymnastic History


The Gymnastic word sources from greek language 'gumnos' (nude). As an activity, the gymnastic existed during more than 2.000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began about 100 years ago. During the years of 1800, the individual exhibitions were administered by several school clubs, athletic clubs and ethnic organizations like Turnvereins and Sokols, in Germany.



Although the slowly development to be a success in the schools, the gymnastics bloomed in Turnvereins and in Sokols. Sells the importance this exercises, german Frédéric Louis Jahn invented several apparels and contributed to developing the sport in his country. Afterwardsthe the gymnastic did spread througth Europe.


The International Federation of Gymnastics (IFG) was formed in 1881, then it was called Agency of the European Federation of Gymnastics and it opened the way for international competitions. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) assumed control of the gymnastics, together more other amateur sports, in 1883. Before for these championships " of gymnastics ", for a long time it was accomplished by several clubs and organizations.


Nicolas Cuperus, president of the Belgian Federation of Gymnastics invited several delegations of the European Union of Gymnastics to competitions, during the Belgian festival of gymnastics in 1881, exactly when the European Federation of Gymnastics was created (FEG) renamed to International Federation of Gymnastics (IFG) in 21's.
